Sunday School
Every Sunday the pitter patter of feet (large and small!) can be heard around the church. The children begin in worship with their families for the first 10 minutes or so, and then after the children’s time, the children and youth proceed downstairs to a brief open session. The children gather to pray, take up a collection, hear what’s happening and then are off to their classes. Their classes are age appropriate as are discussions, play, games, crafts and story time depending on the class for the child or the youth.
Junior youth classes can be heard discussing issues that affect their lives as youth. Teens talk about the HSIA (Holy Spirit in Action) especially as it pertains to their Mission Experience in Guatemala. Young children can be seen playing and learning to cooperate with one another and share.
Sunday School (or Church School as some call it) has a class for every age from baby room to teens. We use the Whole People of God Curriculum that gives many different choices for activities for the time the class is together. This curriculum follows the readings in church so the children are following the same lessons as their families. The teachers care about their students and are there to help them in their faith journey. The teachers and helpers are dedicated and make the Sunday School very special. Sunday School takes place from Labour Day to May (Mother’s Day Sunday).
Come and be a part of this exciting program. Not only do we have classes every Sunday, sometimes we have Open Sessions on Poverty and Wealth (last year’s theme) and intergenerational services where the children participate and actually lead the congregation in worship. There are special Advent classes where students participate in music, media, story time and services for a four week special program.
Sunday school is an exciting time for all! Come join us! All are welcome!
Junior Youth
The junior youth were involved in our huge party for Celebration Sunday, which included a 100 foot banana split, games, an outdoor carnival and fun for all. The youth are currently collecting shoes for a program called “Fit Feet on the Street”. The shoes are collected, cleaned and repaired, with the help of Canadian Footwear, so people who need shoes and boots can receive them in a dignified manner.
The youth are active in their Sunday School classes sharing and discussing issues meaningful to them. Watch for more events and activities for this group of kids.
Senior Youth
From 2003-2019, the Holy Spirit in Action Youth Group of St. Andrew’s River Heights United Church have provided education assistance to youth in San Pedro Sacatepéquez, Guatemala. In 2011, 36 youth received a ‘hand up’ to cover the cost of their tuition, transportation and other educational costs. Education transforms the lives of children, families and communities – giving transforms our lives! It was a wonderful thing to be a part of a treasured moment of our history!
